CULTIVATING

Weeds are the farmers nemesis. At one time we used hoes to control them. I should probably explain for those from the city: a hoe wasn’t your girlfriend it was basically a stick with a chopping blade on one end. Today weeds are usually controlled on the majority of farms with chemicals but for most of history or if you farm organically, weeds have to be cultivated from your fields.

There were once “Ho-boys” who traveled the country side working on farms hoeing weeds from fields. The name Hobo was derived from these transient laborers. Then came mechanical weed control devices which were drawn by animals until International Harvester introduced a tractor termed a “row crop.” It was designed to navigate rows of crops. They called it a “Farmall” because it could do it all, you no longer needed old Nellie.
